Raising the retirement age is one of the most pressing concerns for younger generations, as multiple factors suggest that the Social Security system’s ability to continue paying out benefits in the future may become unsustainable. However, President Donald Trump has made his position unmistakably clear since the start of his political campaign.
Trump has pledged not to raise the retirement age, even though several Republican factions have advocated for an adjustment. That said, the final decision doesn’t rest solely with the president.
In 2023, the president stated plainly that there would be no increase in the retirement age and no cuts to Social Security benefits. He also emphasized that “under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security.”
The Republican Study Committee in the House of Representatives has proposed gradually increasing the full retirement age from 67 to 69 for workers who turn 62 by the year 2033.
Other organizations, such as the Heritage Foundation and the Project 2025 initiative, have voiced their support for raising the retirement age. They cite longer life expectancy among the population and suggest that age 70 would be the most suitable point for retirement.
However, such an increase could lead to a reduction of lifetime benefits by as much as 13%, according to an analysis backed by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
The legislative proposal known as the One Big Beautiful Bill aims to maintain the current retirement age. Still, it introduces a new formula for calculating pension annuities: starting January 1, 2027, retirees would see their benefits based on their five highest-earning years instead of the top three. This shift would effectively reduce pension payments, especially for those who received salary increases toward the end of their careers.

Trump, for his part, has remained firm on his campaign promises. Should he change his mind, it would require congressional approval and could tarnish his image—potentially alienating older voters in the process.
Despite Trump’s opposition, some Republican circles may continue to push for an increase in the retirement age. However, these reforms would be introduced as legislative proposals in Congress and would lack the president’s endorsement.
