The United States has withdrawn soldiers and military vehicles from bases where it had been stationed for years, most notably the al-Omar oil field base in Deir Ezzor province in eastern Syria.
The American newspaper “The New York Times,” citing unnamed US officials, reported on Thursday, April 17, that the US military began closing three of its small military bases in northeastern Syria.
The report added that the United States started withdrawing hundreds of troops from the region, reflecting a change in the security environment in the country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.
The American newspaper quoted unnamed “senior level” US officials as saying that the US military would close three of its operational small bases in Syria, reducing the number of US troops from 2,000 to about 1,400 soldiers.
The US withdrawal included the Mission Support Site Green Village (Conoco Field), the Euphrates Site (Al-Omar Field), and a much smaller facility that the newspaper did not mention.
The officials told the newspaper that after 60 days, US leaders would assess the possibility of making further reductions, and some US leaders recommended keeping at least 500 American soldiers in Syria, according to one official.
With military forces clashing against the Islamic State group in northeastern Syria in 2017, the region witnessed a race between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Russian and Iranian-backed Syrian regime to control as much territory as possible at the expense of the group.
Over time, following military operations, the SDF announced on October 22, 2017, that its forces, supported by the International Coalition, had gained control over the al-Omar oil field, the largest oil field in Syria, after regime forces conducted military operations toward it for days.
As the SDF solidified its areas of influence in the region up to the Euphrates River from the eastern side, the al-Omar field became known as the largest military base for US forces in Syria.
Just a short distance to the north, the Conoco gas plant and a power generation station have suffered significantly in recent years after the Islamic State takeover, experiencing dozens of airstrikes from the International Coalition, causing considerable damage.
In February, the American network “NBC News” reported that the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) had drawn up plans for a complete withdrawal from Syria within a timeframe of 30 to 90 days.
The network stated that US President Donald Trump and close officials expressed their interest in withdrawing US forces from Syria, prompting the Pentagon to prepare withdrawal plans in 30, 60, or 90 days.
The network quoted two officials at the Pentagon saying that the department is working on plans to withdraw all US forces from Syria.
Also, at the end of January, President Trump stated that he would make a decision regarding the presence of US forces in Syria.
In comments to reporters at the White House at the time, responding to a question about his intention to withdraw US forces from Syria, Trump said, “I don’t know who said that, but we will make a decision on that.”
The US president continued, “We are not involved in Syria; Syria is in chaos, they have enough chaos there, they do not need our participation.”
