Army leaders from 32 nations to discuss Indo-Pacific security at LANPAC forum – Hawaii News Now

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Army chiefs and top brass from 32 countries are set to take part in the Land Forces of the Pacific (LANPAC) symposium from May 13-15 at the Sheraton Waikiki.
Gen. Ron Clark, commanding general of U.S. Army Pacific, joined HNN’s Sunrise to share how partnerships and forums like LANPAC help ensure peace and security across the Indo-Pacific region.
“This is all about our ability to prevent war by building necessary capacity and interoperability with our partners and allies in the region,” Clark said. “We campaign forward throughout the region for the purpose of preventing war.”
Hosted with the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), LANPAC comes amid ongoing tensions with China, and allegations it’s ‘bullying’ other nations like the Philippines, where more than 14,000 Filipino, U.S., Australian, and Japanese service members recently completed the 40th iteration of Balikatan Exercises.
Under the theme “Prevailing Through LandPower,” this year’s symposium will focus on deterrence and strengthening connections. Keynote speakers include Adm. Samuel Paparo, Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and Gov. Josh Green.
USARPAC hosts rigorous joint-multinational exercises to ensure land forces are trained and equipped for the unique terrain and conditions of Pacific warfare.
But with the state’s rejection of the Army’s final environmental impact statement on Friday to retain its lease on state land for the Pohakuloa Training Area on Hawaii Island, the U.S. Army is also navigating increased backlash and distrust of the military.
Clark says partnerships are a warfighting advantage and “the secret sauce” of U.S. strategy in the Indo-Pacific, which do not just apply to foreign powers, but also to state and local communities concerned with protecting the aina and cultural heritage.
A detailed schedule, participant list, and discussion topics of LANPAC can be found on the conference website,
The event will be live streamed here.
