Perhaps the surest sign of the times was the egg – medium-size, hard-boiled, dyed a gilded shade of yellow – hurtling through the air above the White House lawn.
It was the handiwork of one of President Donald Trump’s grandsons, who had lined up for the annual tradition Monday of rolling Easter eggs on the grounds behind the Executive Residence. His father, Donald Trump Jr., stood near the starting line and blew a golden whistle between his lips. As the other children used their wooden spoons to nudge their eggs through the grass, the young Trump fashioned his like a catapult, delighting his father and siblings as his egg soared by their heads.
Some of Don Jr.’s other children joined in for the next round. (All five of them were in attendance – as was Junior’s girlfriend, Bettina Anderson, who filmed the kids at the starting line.) By the third go, one of the grandchildren’s eggs had been flung dangerously close to nearby picnic tables, where kids had been making cards to send to members of the military. If it had been launched a few minutes earlier, it might have hit their grandfather or first lady Melania Trump, who had folded themselves behind the tables to color alongside them.
