Chevy Chase Told Racist Jokes to Donald Glover on Set of 'Community' – EBONY Magazine

Donald Glover is a relatively private celebrity, choosing to share details of his life through his art rather than regular interviews or social media. While speaking about the new season of Atlanta, the renaissance man opened up to The New Yorker about the show, growing up in the Southern metropolis and his unstoppable career, which includes a five-season stint on Community.

It’s been previously reported that co-star Chevy Chase frequently made cast and crew uncomfortable with ignorant comments while filming the NBC hit. According to Deadline, Chase was forced to issue an apology after using the N-word during an argument with show creator Dan Harmon back in 2012, an incident that caused a halt in production.
Harmon confirmed to The New Yorker that the influential comic often made racist jokes between takes and intentionally tried to ruin co-stars’ scenes. He reportedly even told Glover, “People think you’re funnier because you’re black.”
“Chevy [Chase] was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off,” Harmon said. “I remember apologizing to Donald after a particularly rough night of Chevy’s non-P.C. verbiage, and Donald said, ‘I don’t even worry about it.’”
Glover believes the National Lampoon star acted out because he knew his time in the limelight was coming to a close.

“I just saw Chevy as fighting time—a true artist has to be O.K. with his reign being over. I can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water,” Glover said. “But I know there’s a human in there somewhere — he’s almost too human.”
Chase soon responded to Glover’s assessment, telling the respected publication he was “saddened to hear” Glover “perceived me in that light.”
