Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke about the EU’s chief diplomat Kaja Kallas, stating that China “will not accept” Russia’s defeat in the war it started against Ukraine. According to him, after the conflict ends, the United States will focus its attention on China. This information was reported by CNN, citing its sources.
Wang Yi made this statement during a meeting with Kaja Kallas on July 2 in Brussels. His position contradicts China’s official neutral stance on Russia’s war against Ukraine. It also indicates that China prefers a prolonged conflict to delay a potential confrontation with the United States.
During the discussion, Wang Yi and Kaja Kallas touched on topics including Taiwan, the Middle East, trade, and cybersecurity. The focus on Ukraine and the Russia-Ukraine war suggests that China has more geopolitical interests in this conflict than it officially acknowledges.
On July 4, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated that China “is not a party to the Ukrainian crisis” (as China refers to the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine) and expressed interest in a “ceasefire.”
“The prolonged Ukrainian crisis serves no purpose. Together with the international community and considering the will of the parties involved, we will continue to play a constructive role in achieving this goal.”
Additionally, it became known that the Security Service of Ukraine discovered components made in China in the “Geran” drones, which are the Russian version of the “Shahed” and were used in attacks on Kyiv on July 4.
