President Donald Trump has been branded "stupid" after he made a "glaring error" in his message to the new pope.
This week, it was confirmed that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost would become pope following the recent tragic passing of Pope Francis. Since the news broke, President Trump issued a message to congratulate the man whose attacks on 'homosexual lifestyle' came back to haunt him, then became the first North American pope in history.
However, as he released a heartfelt message to the world, many people were quick to point out what was wrong with it – in fact, many people decided to raise what they considered to be a big error. It comes after Trump was branded the 'dumbest president in history' following an extraordinary Oval Office claim.
Following a conclave, which lasted around 24 hours, it was this week announced that the Catholic world has a new leader. Robert Prevost has been elected as the successor to Pope Francis, who died last month at the age of 88, and he will now be known as Pope Leo XIV.
Following the announcement, the president issued a statement via both the White House and his own social media channels. It read: "Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope.
"It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!"
However, though the president released the message with good intentions, many people were quick to point out an error that they thought was "stupid". One person commented: "Great honor isn’t supposed to be capitalized. Bring back grammar."
Another wrote: "First ever north* American pope. There have been other popes who were from the Americas."
A third also replied: "You're wrong!! It's not the first American Pope. The first American pope was Francis!! Study geography!!!"
Meanwhile, someone else commented: "Can someone get POTUS a @grammarly plugin so he stops randomly capitalizing words?"
People were quick to raise two issues with Trump – his grammar and the way he referred to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the "first American pope". This is because Pope Francis was from Argentina, located in South America, which caused some to argue there's been an American pope before.
Even though Argentina is not in the USA, it's located in the southern part of South America. The USA, meanwhile, is located in North America.
From the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, the new pope recalled that he was an Augustinian priest, but a Christian above anything else. He added: "So we can all walk together."
He was seen speaking in Italian before switching to Spanish, where he recalled the years he spent as a missionary and then archbishop of Chiclayo, Peru.
On Thursday evening, he appeared on St Peter's balcony to greet the crowds gathered in the square – together with the world – for the first time as the 267th pope. He spent time waving to thousands of people as they cheered and shouted his name.
On Thursday, cardinals made their way back to the Sistine Chapel to resume voting for a new pope. The first conclave ballot failed to elect a new leader.
A two-thirds majority, or 89 ballots, was needed to secure the position of the 267th pope. On Wednesday, the casting and counting ballots process took longer than predicted due to the large number of cardinals taking part, as well as the linguistic diversity among them.
On Wednesday, voting cardinals began their behind-closed-doors meeting in Casa Santa Marta. Back in 2013, Pope Francis was elected in a similar amount of time.
When it came to deciding who will be his successor, Pope Francis appointed some 108 of the 133 cardinals who helped decide. Described as "the people’s pope", Pope Francis was a popular pontiff.
When he died on Easter Monday, tributes poured in from leaders across the world. As well as this, his funeral drew hundreds of thousands of mourners.
