The white Afrikaners who have accepted resettlement in the United States did not face “any form of persecution” in South Africa, the foreign ministry said on Monday. It came hours after a first group of 49 white South Africans flew out of Johannesburg following US President Donald Trump’s offer to grant refugee status to white Afrikaners.
Also, President William Ruto has announced that all missing Kenyans have been accounted for, and that the dozens of abduction cases linked to deadly anti-government protests have been resolved. The disappearance of young critics of the establishment had sparked international concern.
Finally, a Kenyan court has fined four men almost 7,000 euros each—or sentenced them to one year in prison—for attempting to smuggle over 5,400 giant African harvester ant queens, each valued at around 200 euros. The group—two Belgian teenagers, a Vietnamese man, and a Kenyan national—was arrested early last month . They had faced up to five years in prison in a case experts say marks a shift in biopiracy, from iconic species like elephants to lesser-known ones.
