EXCLUSIVE: A series in development at NBC envisions a U.S. Embassy abroad as the setting for a workplace comedy. The half-hour project, titled Foreign Service, comes from writers Aaron Brownstein and Simon Ganz (Santa Clarita Diet) and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.
Penned by Brownstein and Ganz, Foreign Service follows the American and local staff of a small U.S. Embassy overseas as they navigate interpersonal and international incidents.
Brownstein, Ganz and Kaplan executive produce. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio. Dylan Hammalian is the creative executive for Kapital.
Brownstein and Ganz started their careers as assistants on NBC and Universal TV’s Friday Night Lights and Parenthood before landing their first staff writing job on another NBC/Uni TV show, About a Boy. All three series were run by Jason Katims. Brownstein and Ganz were creators, executive producers and showrunners on comedy Gumshoe, which was picked up to pilot by HBO Max with Randall Einhorn directing. Their series credits also include Kapital’s Netflix dark comedy Santa Clarita Diet and Paramount+’s Beavis and Butt-Head.
