Hearst Connecticut Media Group is negotiating to acquire the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper, it said Thursday. The sale is expected to be finalized early next year, possibly as early as January.
Hearst currently has 9 daily newspapers in Connecticut, including the New Haven Register, the Connecticut Post (Bridgeport), The Stamford Advocate, the Record-Journal (Meriden), the Journal Inquirer (Manchester), The News-Times (Danbury), the Greenwich Time, The Middletown Press (Middletown), and The Hour (Norwalk). Hearst also operates Connecticut Magazine, 16 websites, and more than a dozen weekly news publications.
Hearst also publishes 21 weekly newspapers and Connecticut Magazine and owns the CT Insider brand and news app. The sale would include the weekly newspaper Citizens News.
“At HCMG, we believe that strong independent journalism is the cornerstone of thriving communities,” Publisher Mike DeLuca said in a note sent to staff Thursday. “By acquiring the Republican-American, we ensure that its vital local voice continues to be heard while amplifying our shared commitment to supporting Connecticut’s vibrant, diverse neighborhoods.”
The Waterbury Republican-American became the “Republican-American” in 1990 when the Waterbury American and Waterbury Republican combined. The paper has a long history in Connecticut going back more than 100 years.
