The spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has roundly denounced the ongoing Israeli atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza, describing Israeli attacks on tent shelters housing internally displaced Palestinians as an obvious example of war crimes.
The continuing total siege on Gaza, blockade on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and Israeli airstrikes against refugee camps and makeshift tent encampments are “clear proof of war crime and a crime against humanity,” Esmaeil Baghaei said in a Friday statement.
He urged a decisive global action to try and punish the leaders of the Israeli regime for “genocide and war crimes” in the besieged Gaza Strip, where at least 51,355 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since the onset of the Israeli war in October 2023.
He went on to deplore the United Nations Security Council’s inaction in the face of such brutalities, calling the United States and some European countries, which continue to supply munitions to Israel, as accomplices in the Tel Aviv regime’s crimes.
“The continued impunity of the Zionist regime, alongside its sustained killing of defenseless civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, occupation of parts of Lebanon and Syria, and expansionist policies, gravely threaten peace and security in West Asia,” said the spokesman.
“Regional states must adopt serious measures to prevent escalating instability and counter this apartheid regime’s expansionist policies,” he added.
The statement came as an Israeli military attack on a tent shelter in al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killed a Palestinian man, identified as Ibrahim Khalil Abu Taima, his wife, Hanadi, and their children – aged four, six and eight on Friday.
Local sources said Hanadi was also pregnant at the time of her death. The family members’ bodies have now been transported to the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s Civil Defense agency said Friday that 23 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Jabalia, with casualties confirmed over two phases. Agency official Mohammad al-Mughayyir told AFP that 12 victims were recovered immediately after Thursday’s strike, while 11 more bodies were retrieved overnight and Friday morning.
The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war on the territory, making it become almost uninhabitable.
Baghaei also strongly condemned the repeated Israeli acts of aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon, blatant violations of a shaky ceasefire agreement with the Arab country, air and drone attacks on various regions across Lebanon, and the assassination of political and social activists in the country.
The spokesman then emphasized the responsibility of the United Nations and the guarantors of the ceasefire agreement to stop these aggressions and crimes.
Following significant losses sustained over nearly 14 months of conflict and the failure to meet its objectives in the offensive against Lebanon, Israel was compelled to accept a ceasefire with Hezbollah. This ceasefire took effect on November 27. On January 27, Lebanon announced its decision to extend the ceasefire with Israel until February 18.
Lebanese authorities have reported more than 2,764 Israeli violations of the truce, including the deaths of at least 194 victims and injuries to 485 others.
