Outbound tourism in Japan is preparing for a significant recovery this summer after a spike in international travel reservations indicated a booming desire among locals to jet over to destinations overseas. Travel researchers say more Japanese people are expected to travel abroad next year than in the previous year, signaling a strong comeback of overseas tourism.
The new estimate, drawn from a wide range of surveys, airline booking data and market trends, suggests 2.44 million travelers will fly overseas for at least one night between July 15 and Aug. 31. That’s a strong 20.8% increase over last summer, signaling growing confidence as travelers look to reacquaint themselves with international destinations.

High Yen Steadies and Bonuses Rise, International Trips Pick Up
Several economic factors are behind this surge. The yen’s decline has also been muted relative to those in previous months, which makes overseas travel less onerous financially, experts said. What’s more, summer bonuses for employees at firms across Japan have been edging higher, giving families and individuals extra money to put toward longer and more elaborate trips.
This financial stability is believed to have freed up pent-up demand for international holidays that were repressed during the years of the pandemic. There are so many other tourists who are preferring more off-the-beaten-track destinations, perhaps showing that when we spend good money we want to see new things and different cultural experiences.
South Korea, Europe and U.S. Favorites Among Global Options
Based on the numbers, South Korea and Europe are the top places to visit this summer. They are popular due to a mix of being easy to fly to, having interesting things to see and do, and featuring lively food scenes. Taiwan and Southeast Asia are directly behind, providing easy short-haul escapes and tropical holidays for Japanese travelers.
There is also a growing interest on the US mainland. Travel industry insiders largely attribute this to increased direct-flight options and a growing interest in American cities, landmarks and national parks by Japanese visiting the United States.
Domestic Outbound Travel to Hit 90% of Pre-Pandemic Level
Japan’s foreign tourism was booming before the global pandemic, but growth for outbound travel has lagged that for domestic trips in recent years. But the momentum of this summer could represent a significant milestone. If predictions are realised, international travel will recover to around 90% of the pre-pandemic 10-year average, the closest the country’s outbound travel market has come to market recovery.
The bounce back is not only heartening for airlines and travel agencies; it’s also good news for global destinations that depend strongly on Japanese travelers to drive their tourism economies.
While outbreaks spread around the world, domestic travel remains constant
Led by the headlines around overseas travel, domestic travel in Japan continues to be solid. Forecasts are that there will be 72.2 million residents to go for domestic trips this summer, a marginal 0.3% increase compared with the previous year. Some of the most well-liked destinations within the country are Okinawa, Hokkaido and Kyoto, which are visited for their picturesque landscapes, cultural traditions and gourmet treats.
This builds upon a growing trend in which more Japanese nationals are already looking forward to discovering the world, yet also featuring a stronger sense of loyalty to domestic visitor hotspots.
Travelers Find New Styles and Expansive Horizons
A notable change in Japan tourism is the variety of travelling styles and areas. More are looking beyond classic short-haul escapes and embracing longer sojourns in more far-flung countries. Travel agencies say Japanese are increasingly ready to invest time and money in overseas experiences—be it culture tours in Europe, car trips through America or wellness retreats in Southeast Asia.
This shift is a result of changing consumer habits and the increased value placed by travellers on meaningful and memorable experiences when travelling, rather than budget holidays.
“Japan is still in the majority of countries that see an increase in this summer compared to last summer, together with South Korea, Taiwan and the United States,” said Hana Kantor from OAG, with more Japanese citizens getting back their confidence to travel globally, supported by the stronger yen, relaxed travel restrictions, and additional flight offerings.
Japan Travel Market to Keep Growing Strongly
The travel sector is looking forward to a buzzy summer, which should be good news for airlines, hotels and tour groups. It is believed that Japan’s outbound tourism will still show growth and positive development during 2019, driven along by beneficial exchange rates and better consumer confidence.
Amid open borders and loosening restrictions around the world, Japanese tourists are taking advantage, helping to fuel a robust resurgence in international travel.
