During his visit to the United States, Lithuanian Chief of Defence General Raimundas Vaikšnoras said American troops in the Baltic states were “the cornerstone of our security”.
“The US rotational force in Lithuania remains the cornerstone of our security. Since the restoration of our independence, the United States has contributed at various levels to the training of our troops, the development of competencies and the strengthening of military cooperation,” Vaikšnoras said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
US troops have been rotating intermittently in Lithuania since the spring of 2014. There are now about 1,000 American troops serving in Lithuania.
During his visit, Vaikšnoras met with General Randy A George, chief of staff of the United States Army, Christopher W Grady, vice chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other representatives of the American armed forces.
