Moscow Launches Construction of Sergei Kabanov, Russia’s Fifth Amphibious Assault Ship – UNITED24 Media

Russia has begun building a fifth large amphibious assault ship of the Ivan Gren-class (Project 11711), according to defense observers and Russian media sources. The vessel, named Sergei Kabanov, is being constructed at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad and is intended for the Black Sea Fleet.
Based on available reports, the Sergei Kabanov is expected to be launched in 2031, with commissioning projected for late 2032.

Project 11711, developed by the Nevskoye Design Bureau, features an updated ship architecture with an extended flight deck at the stern, allowing for the operation of helicopters—both multipurpose and transport-combat types. These amphibious assault ships are the largest of their kind in terms of displacement built for the modern Russian Navy.
They can carry up to 300 troops and military vehicles—including up to 13 tanks or 36 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) or armored personnel carriers (APCs). Their standard displacement is 5,000 tons, with a full load reaching 6,600 tons.
The Sergei Kabanov is not the only ship of its class under construction. Another vessel, Vasily Trushin, is also being built at Yantar, highlighting Russia’s ongoing investment in amphibious capabilities.
Separately, Russia recently launched the Nikolai Zubov, a Project 23550 ice-class patrol ship, at the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg. This follows the slow progress of the class lead ship, Ivan Papanin, which began construction in 2016 but only began sea trials in mid-2024.
Previously, it was reported that Russia has quietly launched the Vice-Admiral Burilichev, a new oceanographic research vessel suspected by Western analysts to serve as an intelligence-gathering platform.
