ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) — The U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen in the Class of 2028 are set to take place in a longstanding tradition on Wednesday morning.
The class will work together to climb a greased Herndon Monument in Annapolis beginning at 8 a.m. on May 14.
After being hosed down with water, the barefoot plebes, will form a human pyramid to retrieve a white hat, known as a "Dixie Cup," from atop the monument and replace it with an upperclassman's hat.
Of course, the monument itself is covered in roughly 200 pounds of vegetable shortening.
According to the Baltimore Sun, the monument is named for Cmdr. William Lewis Herndon, who drowned with his ship off the coast of North Carolina in 1857 after trying to save as many passengers as possible.
The climb coincides with the roughly 14-hour-long Sea Trials and is the true culminating event of their plebe year, the United States Naval Academy said. The company of plebes awarded for the top unit performance during Sea Trials will lead the rest of the plebes in rushing the monument.
Last year's climb was completed in 2 hours and 19 minutes.
