Russia claims it downed Ukrainian drone carrier – Defence Blog

Russian forces have released footage purporting to show the interception of a Ukrainian “drone carrier” aircraft over southern Ukraine.
The incident reportedly took place in airspace above the Russian-occupied Kherson region, according to statements from pro-Kremlin bloggers.
The video, published by Russian military channels on Sunday, shows what appears to be an intercept drone engaging and destroying a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Russians allege the downed platform was a specialized Ukrainian UAV configured to operate as a launch and control relay for smaller FPV (First-Person View) attack drones.
The Ukrainian aircraft was acting as an airborne carrier and repeater station for FPV drones, enabling deep strikes against Russian positions.
Defense analysts have previously noted Ukraine’s growing use of “mother ship” UAVs to extend the range and effectiveness of its drone campaigns. These larger drones serve as mobile launch pads and communication relays, allowing operators to strike Russian assets even in areas shielded from ground-based control signals.
This is the first confirmed Russian claim of destroying such an airborne drone-carrier system.
Earlier reports indicated that Ukraine has been experimenting with long-endurance UAVs capable of carrying multiple smaller drones. These systems have been described as a cost-effective method to saturate enemy defenses and conduct surveillance deep into contested territory.
