US President Donald Trump has said he will shorten a 50-day deadline imposed on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine to avoid sanctions to “10 or 12 days”.
“I’m disappointed in President Putin,” he said, speaking alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of their meeting in Scotland. “I’m going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number.”
Just an hour later, Trump reporters that this would be cut to “10 or 12 days” from now – meaning the deadline would be either August 5 or 7.
Trump previously set a 50-day deadline starting 14 July for Putin to avoid what he described as “very severe tariffs” during a meeting in the Oval Office with Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that any peace deal requires Ukraine to withdraw from the four regions illegally annexed by Moscow in September 2022, which Russia never fully captured.
It comes after Russian forces downed nearly 100 Ukrainian drones over several regions from Saturday night into Sunday. The drone threat also forced the shutdown of St Petersburg Pulkovo airport, leading to the suspension of dozens of flights in the early hours of Sunday.
Russian national flag carrier Aeroflot AFLT.MMwas forced to cancel dozens of flights on Monday, disrupting travel across the world’s biggest country, as two pro-Ukraine hacking groups claimed to have inflicted a crippling cyberattack.
Passengers vented their anger on social network VK, complaining about a lack of clear information from the airline.
Malena Ashi wrote: “I’ve been sitting at Volgograd airport since 3:30!!!!! The flight has been rescheduled for the third time!!!!!! This time it was rescheduled for approximately 14:50, and it was supposed to depart at 5:00!!!”
Another woman, Yulia Pakhota, posted: “The call centre is unavailable, the website is unavailable, the app is unavailable.
“How can I return a ticket or exchange it for the next flight, as Aeroflot suggests?”
Aeroflot said affected passengers could get a refund or rebook as soon as its systems were back and it was trying to get some passengers seats on other airlines.
Russian companies and government websites have been subjected to sporadic hacking attacks, but Monday’s was potentially the most damaging, because of the widespread disruption and the high profile of Aeroflot.
Former Aeroflot pilot and aviation expert Andrei Litvinov said: “This is a serious disaster. Okay, flight delays – you can survive that. But these are losses, huge losses for a state-owned company.”
He added: “If all the correspondence, all the corporate data is exposed – this can have very long-term consequences … First the drones, and now they are blowing up this situation from the inside.”
Since his release from a Russian prison in April, Stanislav Tarnavskyi has been in a hurry to build the life in Ukraine he dreamed about during three years of captivity.
The 25-year-old has proposed to his girlfriend, bought an apartment and adopted a golden retriever. And that was just what he accomplished one week in July.
But as busy as he is rekindling old relationships and creating new ones, Tarnavskyi cannot shake the trauma he and thousands of other Ukrainian soldiers experienced as prisoners of war. The U.N. says many endured beatings, starvation and humiliation at the hands of their captors — experiences that will leave lifelong scars.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that a framework trade agreement struck between the European Union and the United States was “anti-Russian” likening it to a de facto ban on buying Russian oil and gas.
The US struck the deal with the EU on Sunday, imposing a 15 percent import tariff on most EU goods.
“Of course, the ‘deal’ is clearly anti-Russian in nature, prohibiting the purchase of our oil and gas,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram.
He predicted the fallout for Europe and its citizens would be damaging as they would have to pay more for their energy.
“One can only feel sorry for ordinary Europeans,” Medvedev said.
Donald Trump has said he is “not interested” in talking with Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine anymore.
Speaking alongside Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, the US President described the conflict as a “really bloody war” and said striking a deal would be “common sense”.
“I think that eventually something’s going to happen,” he adds.
“It should happen fast, so many people are dying.”
President Donald Trump has said he will “probably announce” his new deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine “tonight or tomorrow”.
“It would be sanctions and maybe tariffs, secondary tariff,” he told reporters.
But he added: “I don’t want to do that to Russia”.
“I love the Russian people, they’re great people.”
Russia has inaugurated a new regular air service between Moscow and Pyongyang, a development underscoring the deepening relationship between the two nations.
Donald Trump has increased pressure on Russia to end its war in Ukraine, saying he was setting a new deadline of 10 to 12 days for Moscow to make progress on doing so.
Trump, who is holding meetings in Scotland, said earlier on Monday that he was going to shorten a 50-day deadline he had set because of frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
• Russia pushes toward the frontline city of Pokrovsk, some troops entered the city last week
• Advance was slowed for months by Ukrainian minefields, drones and defensive barriers
• Russia adapted with fibre-optic drones, but has suffered high casualties
• Ill-trained Russian soldiers, some injured, deployed to Pokrovsk, relatives of Russian soldiers say
