President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States will send additional weapons to Ukraine amid escalating Russian attacks. The move follows a temporary pause by the Pentagon last week on some precision munitions shipments due to concerns over declining U.S. stockpiles.
In a call last Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump expressed U.S. intent to support Kyiv’s air defences, according to Axios’ Barak Ravid. “We’re going to send some more weapons, we have to,” Trump stated during a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“They have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now,” the president added, highlighting the toll of the ongoing conflict. “Defensive weapons, primarily, but they’re getting hit very, very hard. So many people are dying in that mess.”
Shortly after the president’s remarks, Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the decision in a statement. “At President Trump’s direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops,” Parnell said.
He added that the Department of Defense’s existing framework for evaluating global military shipments remains in place. “Our framework for POTUS to evaluate military shipments across the globe remains in effect and is integral to our America First defence priorities,” Parnell stated.
