US Green Card holders hold a coveted position for foreign born citizens living in America. In the ongoing crackdown on immigrants, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a series of strong warnings to the green card holders on its social media handles.
The single most important message for the green card holders from USCIS is – Break the laws and you will lose your green card or visa privilege.
Green cards, technically known as Permanent Resident Cards, represent a foreign-born person’s lawful permanent residency status in the United States.
Even though the green card holders are legal migrants, USCIS in a social media post reminds them that, ‘Having a visa or green card is a privilege that can be taken away. Our rigorous security vetting does not end once you’ve been granted access to the U.S. If you come to our country and break the law, there will be consequences, and you will lose your privileges.”
USCIS continuously work alongside the Department of Homeland Security and rigorously vet all foreigners even after a visa or green card has been obtained, claims USCIS.
In another post, USCIS states – Everyone should be on notice. If you’re a guest in our country – act like it. Our robust social media vetting program to identify national security & public safety risks never stops. USCIS is on watch to find anything online that poses a threat to our nation & our way of life.
US officials are being tough on immigration. USCIS is reminding them that coming to America and receiving a visa or green card is a privilege and the US laws and values must be respected. “If you advocate for violence, endorse or support terrorist activity, or encourage others to do so, you are no longer eligible to stay in the U.S.,” says USCIS.
As of January 2023, there were 12.7 million lawful permanent residents in the US or the green card holders.
Green card holders can lose their status and permanent residency due to national security threats. If accused of a crime, their case goes through the justice system, while their permanent status is revoked in immigration court.
Green cards and visas can be revoked if a foreigner breaks the law, supports terrorism, overstays their permitted visit time, performs illegal work, or anything else that violates the terms on which USCIS granted them this privilege or compromises the safety of the fellow Americans.
Last year, USCIS automatically extended the validity of Permanent Resident Cards or the Green Cards to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, effective September 10, 2024.
Green cards are a popular pathway for US immigration, granting lawful permanent resident (LPR) status, allowing one to live, work, own property and subsequently apply for US citizenship through the process of Naturalization.
