USCIS releases new I-9 form – McKnight's Senior Living

US Citizenship and Immigration Services last week introduced what it called “minor changes” to the I-9 employee verification form and e-verify updates.
Immigrants fill about 20% of healthcare support roles in the United States, by some estimates, McKnight’s Long-Term Care News previously reported. The American Immigration Council found in 2022 that about 4% of those immigrant healthcare support workers, or about 258,000, were undocumented.
Among the changes to the form, the language in the fourth checkbox in Section 1 now uses the word alien instead of noncitizen, as in “alien authorized to work,” in the list of options that employees may select in noting the citizenship or immigration status of an employee.
Likewise, the citizenship status selection during case creation was updated to “an alien authorized to work.”
“Noncitizen” was the term that began being used in 2023 under the Biden administration.
USCIS also revised descriptions of two List B documents in the list of acceptable documents for I-9 verification but did not state what those changes were.
Existing Form I-9s, dated Aug. 1, 2023, are valid until May 31, 2027, at the latest, depending on the version an employer is using, USCIS said. The new form contains an edition date of Jan. 20, 2025, and an expiration date of May 31, 2027.
The revised Form I-9, which has an edition date of Jan. 20, 2025, and an expiration date  of May 31, 2027, is now available for download.
“Employers should ensure that the new form is integrated into their employee verification systems by July 31, 2026, and communicated to the staff responsible for employee eligibility verification,” SHRM advised. “Employers should also review their Form I-9 compliance and prepare for potential I-9 audits and worksite visits, experts said.”
