In his evening address on July 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that preparations are underway for a new round of negotiations with the Russian side.
The upcoming meeting is expected to take place in Turkey on July 23, according to Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who briefed the President earlier in the day.
“Today, I discussed with Rustem Umerov preparations for an exchange and another meeting in Turkey with the Russian side,” Zelenskyy said. “Umerov reported that the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. More details will be available tomorrow.”
The announcement came as Ukraine continued to respond to a new wave of Russian missile and drone strikes, which targeted several regions across the country, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Ivano-Frankivsk.
“All day today, we’ve been working to deal with the aftermath of Russia’s attack on our cities and communities,” Zelenskyy stated. “There was a heavy strike against Kyiv, though a significant number of drones and missiles were successfully intercepted.”
Zelenskyy emphasized that such attacks reinforce two key needs for Ukraine’s defense: more air defense systems and continued long-range strikes on Russian military infrastructure.
“If Putin is so obsessed with using Shaheds and terror tactics, then Russia must be denied the logistics that enable those attacks,” he emphasized. “Everyone who works to protect lives and limit Russia’s capacity to wage war is contributing to peace.”
The President also thanked international partners for supporting stronger sanctions, including secondary sanctions aimed at entities aiding Russia’s war effort.
“Let Russian bravado not mislead anyone—the impact of sanctions is real, and they are feeling it,” Zelenskyy noted.
Zelenskyy concluded by restating that peace remains Ukraine’s ultimate goal:
“Russia must end the war it started. No one else needs this war. There will be peace—and I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine, and all our defenders.”
Previously, US Senator Lindsey Graham introduced a new sanctions bill targeting countries that continue to purchase Russian oil, warning that failure to comply with US pressure will result in significant economic consequences.
