Iranian Newspaper Issues Apology, Halts Operations After Retracting Iran-US Talks Story – IranWire

Tehran’s Shargh newspaper has suspended publication until Thursday following its apology to the Iranian Supreme Leader’s office for publishing an article about Iran-US negotiations.
The newspaper cited “extensive technical and infrastructure changes” as the reason for stopping publication on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Shargh had reported on Sunday about a secret meeting where “direct negotiations with the United States were approved,” and three representatives – Ali Larijani, Mohammad Forouzandeh, and Mohammad Javad Zarif – were supposedly selected for the mission.
In its apology, Shargh acknowledged the report was “incorrect and unfounded,” calling it “a professional mistake that does not align with the newspaper’s usual standards.”
The suspension comes amid inconsistent and contradictory information in Iranian media about negotiations between Iran and the US.
While Donald Trump announced “direct” high-level talks would be held next Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi claimed the negotiations would be “indirect.”
The talks in Oman will be mediated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi.
Shargh is not the only publication facing consequences for its Iran-US negotiation coverage.
Keyhan newspaper recently received a warning from Iran’s Press Supervisory Board after threatening to assassinate Donald Trump in a column to avenge the killing of Qasem Soleimani.
