Michael Strahan may be putting his millions of dollars to work as the FOX NFL Sunday star considers a move to purchase a minority stake in his former team, the New York Giants.
Strahan is well-known for his roles on Good Morning America and FOX NFL Sunday, but he also spent 15 years as a defensive end for the Giants. The NFL icon won Super Bowl XLII, Defensive Player of the Year, and was also inducted into the Pro Football of Fame in 2014.
Strahan spent his entire NFL career with the Giants, and is the franchise's all-time sack leader with 141.5. As well as this, the defensive star is well-loved among the fanbase even almost two decades on from his retirement.
And he could endear himself further by investing heavily in their new-age squad. According to Spotrac, Strahan earned $76.4 million in contracts and bonuses across his entire career with the NFC East team.
Now, Celebrity Net Worth values the 53-year-old at $65M after his venture into broadcasting alongside Terry Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson, and old foe Tom Brady.
This estimated net worth is an impressive number, considering the former NFL star was ordered to dish out $15M to his ex-wife Jean Muggli following a publicly awkward divorce. The couple were together from 1999 to 2006, conceiving daughters Isabella and Sophia, but their break-up was far from amicable.
Hello magazine reports that the custody battle between Strahan and Muggli lasted more than 15 years, with the latter awarded over $15M – plus $18,000 a month in child support – after the split was finalized. The child support was reportedly reduced to $5,000 once Strahan retired from the NFL in 2007.
Despite this huge pay-out, the FOX star is still extremely well off; so much so that he is considering splashing the cash to take control of his former franchise team.
We reported earlier this week that Strahan and billionaire Marc Lasry are planning to link up and make a bid to purchase up to 10 per cent of the Giants.
In February, current owners John Mara and Steve Tisch announced the hire of Moelis & Co, an investment bank, to help gauge the possibility of a minority non-controlling stake sale in the team.
The Giants are the third-most valuable franchise in the NFL and are reportedly worth around $7.65 billion. Strahan isn't the first former NFL star to decide to purchase a stake in a team.
In October last year, FOX colleague Brady secured around 10 per cent in the Las Vegas Raiders. So while Strahan is considering a move into ownership with the team he became a legend at, we will likely continue to enjoy his commentary on the modern-day game for plenty of games to come.
